The Story Behind PopIt

There are so many obstacles in the way of getting objectively great service from China (and throughout the Far East).

The distance, the language barrier, and cultural differences are just a few reasons you might get lower quality service within China.  Garbled reports, false information, and hazy details are all examples of the low quality clients are facing today.  As in other areas in our lives, many of us dream of finding an objective platform which is independent of human factors, whether they’re intentional or unintentional.

In this post, we’ll try to predict the future direction of a system that will provide these kinds of services and explore how to technology can be integrated as an inseparable part of that system.

1.     A picture is worth a thousand words; a video is worth a billion

Video is, without a doubt, one of the most important tools for understanding the quality of a product or process.  Unlike pictures, we can show the chronological order of processes, products from different angles without needing to choose a specific picture and edit it.

Platforms of the future will include built-in video so that the system allows the inspector or anyone else to take video in real time.  Unfortunately, there are many ways factories can fool clients who they know aren’t going to show up on their doorstep.  Real-time video guarantees that all video and images you receive are authentic, untampered-with, and authentic – shot to your own specifications and requirements.

Tip 1:  Request video footage of the product under natural daylight from all possible angles, from far away and close up, both when comparing to other products from the same production line and comparing against a “golden sample” product that you’ve sent to the inspector or supplier.

Tip 2:  Ask the inspector to take a picture for you of the production process, the machine setup [A1] parameters, raw materials being used in practice.  Don’t rely on filled-in reports alone.

2.     The right place at the right time

Processes of verifying the inspector’s arrival will help you know ahead of time that the inspector has indeed arrived at the site at the requested time and carried out the report him/herself.  Without this careful supervision, inspectors in the past have been known to use images supplied by the factory to create their report, rather than taking the pictures themselves and relying on details they themselves report back to you as their client.

3.     Real-time communication

Beyond a system that allows the inspector or the expert to carry out tasks in a very precise way, there’s also the constant need for buyers to be present “on the ground,” in the factory itself.  More than once, we’ve heard those ordering services saying things like:  “If I was there, I’d know what to do,” or “If only I could have opened up the boxes I wanted by myself,” or “If I’d been there and walked around the factory, I’d have realized the level of quality there in just a few minutes.”

The ability of buyers not only to control what they see but also to request that the inspector carry out requests for them in real time is a substantial value added.  The buyer takes control and can request the inspector with a camera to walk around and take pictures at every control point within the factory, to carry out some specific request, and even to interview managers or workers – all in real time.

This process will bring about not only a tremendous improvement in improving the decision-making process, adding objectivity and streamlining the uncertainties, but also save a ton of time and money for many companies who can request these services rather than fly themselves to the destination.

4.     Augmented reality

Augmented reality has come a long way in the last decade, but it still hasn’t made the substantial jump to realizing its full potential.  It’s not yet all that common in the private sector except for the gaming field.  And it is almost not in use at all yet professionally in the fields of engineering, medicine, etc.

On the other hand, we’re witnessing a major leap forward in terms of creating mobile devices which understand that these gaps will be closed in the near future and this is important in giving you the ability on any future devices.

How will augmented reality influence the quality of services you receive in the future?  Here are just a few examples:

·      Measurements – measure by camera without the need of any external tools like a tape measure or caliber

·      Assembly – when two products are created in different factories and you must ascertain whether they meet specified tolerances for assembly purposes

·      Wearable products – offering the ability to measure products in a virtual way and compare existing products; to ascertain location of logo printing, textures, etc.

 5.     Beyond the world of global services = New pricing system

Without a doubt, we’re experiencing change and advancement towards a global world.  A world in which place and time have no meaning.  A world which will not only build in this kind of convenience, but also lead to huge savings in the field of service.  A world in which you save the time you’d previously have had to take to perform tasks in distant locations, traveling from country to country, and wasting your own work time while away from the office.

These new technologies aren’t just going to lead to financial savings and provide greater independence in the types of services we’ve discussed here – they’re also going to mean, over time, that you’re less dependent on specialists because you’ll be able to rely on precise, objective technology which will oversee the true situation at the manufacturer’s site.  This alone is going to lead to massive growth in the number of service providers within China, parallel to the rapid growth trend in the number of freelancers in the Western world, and the rise of the marketplace in these fields.

In conclusion, it’s clear that just as in many other fields (autonomous driving, for example), reliance on the human factor is growing less and less while the industry is relying more and more on tools which are scientific, precise, and as objective as possible.  The field of providing services in general, and quality inspection in particular (because of the many limitations, including primarily unreliability) is fertile ground for rapid growth of these in-demand services which are readily available, fast, precise, independent, and substantially less expensive.
